Who Is Gillian Flynn?

Gillian Schieber Flynn is an American author and screenwriter best known for her dark, twisty psychological thrillers. Flynn was born on February 24, 1971, in Kansas City, Missouri, and she currently lives in Chicago, Illinois.

Family and Early Life

Flynn grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. Both of her parents were teachers at a local community college. Her mother taught reading and her father taught film. Growing up surrounded by books and movies strongly shaped her imagination and later influenced her interest in storytelling and dark, character-driven fiction.

Education

Gillian Flynn studied English and Journalism at the University of Kansas, where she earned her bachelor’s degree. She then completed a master’s degree in Journalism at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.

Career Before Becoming a Novelist

After graduate school, Flynn worked as a journalist. She became a staff writer and later a television critic for the entertainment magazine Entertainment Weekly, where she wrote about film and TV. In 2008, during company cutbacks, her position was eliminated. Losing that job pushed her to focus on fiction writing full time.

Current Life

Gillian Flynn now lives in Chicago with her husband and children. Along with writing novels, she also works as a screenwriter and producer, especially on film and TV adaptations of her own books.
